Been a long time since I wrote a feature-length magazine article. Enjoyed writing this one, which concerns unreliable sources, cavalry, Greensboro, race relations, barbers, and more.
Photo by Lisa Scheer, who also taught me a lot of what I know about African-American intellectual history and Warnersville. She was mentored on the latter topic by James Griffin and the late Otis Hairston, Jr., and has explored it in depth with the help of Harvey Robinson and Carolyn de Berry.
Lots of interesting stories to tell in this town.
Nice article, demonstrates how little we know about the details of so much, but the broad brush paints a picture of how we come to know better our complicated history and how our understanding evolves over time.

Would you happen to know what year Warnersville was annexed into the City of Greensboro?

Billy, check the N&R archives. Oh, wait....never mind.

Billy, I'm not sure of the date, but some other, more far-flung areas were annexed around WWII, so close-in Warnersville may have been brought in earlier. Certainly it was part of the City in time to be bulldozed by urban renewal.
