UDPATE MONDAY 9:30 AM Site still down.
Contradicting Jeff Martin's earlier report, indications now are that the hamster died. /update
The N&R site was down when I checked it this morning.
It says something that I forgot check to see if it ever came back up.
Apparently it did, for a while, but is dead again.
Jeff Martin is an experienced software developer, so I'll accept his explanation of the outage. Sorry if it's a little technical: "...a kid accidentally unplugged the server in the spare bedroom of the house in K’ville where the website is hosted."
Could this be the latest strategy to get people to subscribe to the print edition?
Thanks.

The Iranians have finally gotten fed up with the N-R's hard-hitting reporting.

The website has been unreadable since the design change and the new comment policy has done nothing but allow spam and diminish comments on stories to pretty much zero. But hey, that was a great op-ed by Gauger on the Hartzman story, wasn't it?

Don't worry, "We have a Plan B soon, and we'll be posting news updates here and Facebook."

As usual, I'm reading the e-Edition, which comes via a contractor. So at least they got the paper out in some form.
The Piedmont Triad Partnership's daily Quick Clips news email cited Dick Barron's article on yesterday's A1, but it couldn't link to the N&R itself. It had to link to a site that reproduced the article. So PTP had a Plan B too.

Andrew, I'm biased of course, but being two weeks late doesn't seem to be much of a Plan B on PTP's part.

I bought one day of the electronic edition to try it out. Out of some kind of warped nostalgia, I decided to buy a longer subscription. Two or three efforts failed because of technical difficulties. I gave up but soon discovered that I still had access although my subscription had expired. For about three weeks I've had access to it for free, and I think the value fairly approximates what I'm paying for it.

"So at least they got the paper out in some form."
That so well illustrates the mindset that is dragging them down. It's still about getting "the paper" out.

news-record.us? Jeff wasn't kidding, that domain is owned by Steven Doyle... of Kernersville. Plug the server back in, Steven!

Getting the paper out is still what pays the bills, so it's hard to ignore that cash cow.
That said, they definitely need to focus on their online strategy and product. This prolonged outage, coming as it does in the wake of the wan new website, makes me wonder if they really understand that imperative.

It's not like you, Ed to rush to judgement. Let's give publisher Robin Saul the benefit of the doubt for another six years.

Sorry, seven years.

news-record.us invites people to monitor the N&R on Twitter until the site is fixed and the link they provide to them on Twitter is... malformed and doesn't take you to Twitter. What a bunch of clowns. What an absolute inept bunch of miserable clowns.

Patrick, make sure your credit card isn't being charged for access.

Thanks, Hugh. They only charged for the one day. It seems like piling on at this point, but you'd think that given the problems with the newspaper business model, they would at least be prepared to accept the money if someone wants to pay them for electronic access or to cut them off if they don't pay.

Ignite Interactive is the web host.
I'd love to know the provenance of that decision.

On the bright side, you can go to any article, letter or editorial with enabled comments and buy air jordans, nikes, tickets, jerseys, etc. Nice touch I think.
