Marriage is far too strong an institution to have phony “protections” like this one. And the final and sad irony is that this amendment is being pushed by the very people who fancy themselves enemies of what they call “big government,” yet in this case, they’re fine with government intruding in people’s personal lives.
But the people have the final say, and they can say no.
Amen.
If it passes, I wonder how long it will take conservatives to start boycotting and/or bringing suit against businesses that provide benefits to unmarried couples?
The N&O gets it right when it says this unnecessary amendment is a calculated effort to rouse the Republican base. I wonder, then, how many other rights conservatives are willing to take away to foster their own political power and to make manifest their sectarian beliefs?
For some reason I'm thinking of Hester Prynne.
