A better marketing campaign --maybe one that emphasized the source material as an ur-text of sci-fi and fantasy -- would not have saved John Carter, because the movie is meh, but something beyond the generic ads might have helped stop the bleeding a bit.
It's been a long, long time since I read the books, but in general I thought the look was good. The Thark were well executed. I was un-wowed by Dejah Thoris or John Carter, although neither was terrible.
If you had no connection to the books, a strong preference for overstuffed CGI-fests featuring lots of British accents is recommended.
My friend who made me go dozed off during the picture and gave it a 3 on a scale of 10.
What? No sequel?

I thought it was so-so. My son (12) really liked it.
