I was thinking last week that "leftovers" doesn't do justice to foods that get better with some age.
But calling meatballs "vintage" sounds silly, and using that word for the remains of a Jersey Mike's sub would be absurd, although the latter, a couple of days old and eaten at room temp, just provided me a nice madeleine moment involving the Nixon-era Jay's deli at Friendly Center.
Growing up, we always called them "betterovers."

Got a family recipe hamburger vegetable soup that requires a couple of days to reach peak flavor.

The ginormous subs from Jay's Deli, two of which literally filled a large grocery bag, remain the best I've ever eaten. So much bread, so little filling, but absolute heaven.

As a kid I loved the 1/2 Jay's sub and a trip into Will's Book Store next door. Those were the good old days.
