Gannett is hiring at its production hubs. Any hiring seems like good news these days, with extra points for newspaper-industry hiring, but I wonder what the net employment numbers are when losses at individual papers are factored in. Also, I don't see reporters being added...
Gannett's net employment numbers would seem likely to decline, right? Why would they consolidate layout and design in Louisville if not to cut costs? At a minimum, they'll cut a few management positions. You don't need layout and design managers in Cincinnati or Indianapolis if they don't have anyone to manage.
It will be interesting if the papers involved in this all start to look alike.
I wonder what would happen if some third-party startup offered itself up as a place to which any newspaper could outsource layout and design.
