Peanut butter and banana sandwiches

As the article you linked to mentions, "When Elvis Presley died in 1977, CBS News was criticized for choosing not to lead its newscast with it."

As well they should have been criticized. Elvis is king.

But seriously, I'm not a huge Michael Jackson fan but one can hardly ignore the death of the man who has the highest selling album of all time (Thriller) and whose music spans across literally four decades.

I do agree that the media cover celebrity news more than ever before, but then again there are more and more media than ever before as well. CBS, NBC, and ABC was about it in 1977 in terms of national broadcast media and all of the hundreds of media outlets these days have to fill their shows with some kid of content.

Celebrity news coverage is much cheaper than covering "real news" out in the field, easy to do, and gathers a lot of attention.
