One clarification: BCBSNC is, technically, a nonprofit, but it does pay some taxes -- about $140 million in 1986, for example.

Also, unfortunately, the chart that accompanies that article seems to have disappeared from the Web site, but it showed that BCBSNC's "profit margin" -- excess of revenue over expenses, amounted to roughly the same percentage of revenue as did Moses Cone Health System's. (MCHS is a 501c3 nonprofit, the kind most people think of when they think of a tax-exempt charity.) And neither's margin was all that great -- something in the range of 3.7%, if I remember correctly.
