Barr could have an impact on the presidential race in NC. "It's a long way until the election but the early indication is that Bob Barr's presence on the ballot could be a good sign for whoever ends up as the Democratic nominee," said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling. "He's likely to siphon off more voters who would otherwise be inclined to vote for McCain than he is from Clinton or Obama."
Previously: "[T]he prospect of a relatively strong Libertarian in the race can't be comforting to McCain, who got less than 75% of the primary vote here, while Ron Paul and No Preference combined for more than 10%."
I live in Fayetteville, and I've been telling everyone I know that NC is up in the air, and I think that's especially true if Barr runs well. McCain's support among both true philosophical conservatives and evangelical conservatives is pretty tepid. After the Gore fiasco in 2000, few liberals are going to be inclined to vote for Nader or any other third party.
Not saying that Obama or Clinton will win NC, but I think they'll make McCain spend time and money here.
