Josh Marshall: "I find it fascinating just how openly the Republican establishment just hates Mike Huckabee...they're pissed at him for not understanding the proper role of Christian conservatives in the Republican party, which is to supply votes, phone-bankers and general grunt work.
"My pal Mike Lind in one of his books had this great line about the GOP Triangular Trade in which Southern evangelicals provide the votes for a party financed by and run on behalf of Wall Street and with policies devised by a gang of New York intellectuals and scribblers. He put it more eloquently. But he had it about right."
Setting his overt Christianity aside for a moment, he seems to be a likable and effective leader.

The biggest plus for The Huckster is his support for the fair tax act.
But I could never vote for someone not wanting to rid our country of all the illegal aliens invading the U.S.

Good old Josh gets it wrong again.
Can't he actually think a little bit outside his narrow mind to see what reasons Republicans might have for not liking Huck?
Does Marshall not understand that his preconceived misunderstanding about about his agendized view of the relationship of "Christian conservatives" and the Republican party is predictably wrong?

"Does Marshall not understand that his preconceived misunderstanding about about his agendized view of the relationship of "Christian conservatives" and the Republican party is predictably wrong?"
You mean like your "preconceived misunderstanding" of how well you expected Rudy and Fred to do in the run up to the caucuses? Last time I looked, they were dead last. Pretty pathetic for a pair that you said were unbeatable.

"Pretty pathetic for a pair that you said were unbeatable."
Really?
Let's take a look at what I actually said:
"I think there are LOTS of people on the Dem/Lefty/'Progressive' side that deeply fear that Rudy is unbeatable when compared to any of the candidates the Dems are likely to put up."
What's pathetic is your lack of reading comprehension and your lack of comprehension of the dynamics of an election campaign, and in general, most subjects.
You're better off talking about something you have learned about through actual experience.

Maybe I missed it, but I don't recall Huckabee throwing Jesus in anyone's face anymore than any other candidate of either party. Perhaps the evangelicals like him because he is a Baptist minister. He is a likable guy with a good sense of humor, but hardly the man of the hard Right the press is painting him to be.
The Right doesn't like him because he is liberal on taxes and immigration and his record demonstrates confusion over the principles of federalism. Maybe as president he would govern differently. He would have to if he wanted to avoid a second term challenge. I could live with Huckabee over any of the Democrats, but he isn't in my top three GOP candidates.
In reality, Ron Paul is closer to Ronald Reagan than anyone else in the race but he has no chance of winning.

I understood perfectly what you said, and what you stated was a classic straw-man argument. "lots of people on the Dem/Left/Progressive side"... WHO? Who thought they were unbeatable on the left? No one I know and all my friends are left leaning. None of the progressive blogs I read ever thought Guiliani was unbeatable, and HARDLY Fred Thompson. So the only person left in this scenario who thought they were really unbeatable, was you Bubba.
I'd just be easier if you'd admit to yourself that Thompson is your man and he doesn't stand a snowball's chance in hell of winning this election. In a strange irony, you obviously had a lesser political hard-on for Rudy, but he's not getting the nomination either. It's going to be McCain all the way and I don't think that sits very well "lots" of people on the right, including you, whether you want to admit it or not.

"So the only person left in this scenario who thought they were really unbeatable, was you Bubba."
Wow....a real live example of tortured logic, right before our very eyes.
What did you put on that last cheese steak, Ged? Magic Mushrooms?
And you really need to get out more, and diversify your reading selection.

HAHAHA! Now I know why you're so screwed up Bob. You actually think Chris Matthews is a liberal or "progressive" don't you? God, you're so adorable!

"HAHAHA! Now I know why you're so screwed up Bob. You actually think Chris Matthews is a liberal or "progressive" don't you? God, you're so adorable!"
Oh gosh, Ged.....you're so right on target here.
Excerpt:
"As a young man Matthews supported Barry Goldwater, but was inspired to become a Democrat by Eugene McCarthy's pro-civil rights and anti-Vietnam war platforms. When Matthews first arrived in Washington he was given a patronage job as an armed officer with the United States Capitol Police[1].
In Washington Matthews worked for four Democratic politicians. He worked in the U.S. Senate for five years on the staffs of Senators Frank Moss and Edmund Muskie before himself campaigning for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, losing his party's nomination to Pennsylvania Congressman Joshua Eilberg in the Democratic primary in 1974.
He was a presidential speechwriter for four years during the Carter administration. Matthews later worked six years as a top aide to long-time Speaker of the House of Representatives Tip O'Neill."
Yep....he's no liberal or "progressive", is he?

Dunno about you Bubba, but when I want the "pulse of the left" I know the first person I always turn to is Chris Matthews!! Didn't you know he speaks for *all* of us? I'm sure that's what you meant in your "unbeatable" post about Rudy.
You're so fond of Media Matters these days Bob, I don't know what to say! Here's some relevant bits from them regarding Matthews and his current "left leanings". Enjoy!

Let me throw you a rope, Ged......that hole you're digging is getting deeper by the minute:
Senator Barack Obama:
"Let’s roll back the Bush tax cuts on the wealthiest Americans, let’s make certain that those resources go to the people who need it....We’re not going to solve it by pretending that issues of poverty and struggle among working families are just going to go away magically because the stock market is going up."
Moderator Chris Matthews:
"So much of what you say just grabs people like me, because it sounds like Bobby Kennedy. It sounds like the ’60s at its absolute best."

Stay right there, Ged.....I'll run over to Jersey Mike's for some subs to throw down there to you. At least you won't starve. But watch out for the sides of that hole to cave in on you. I don't have access to a backhoe tonight.

Man, you must be like the oldest curmudgeon in the Triad Bob. I'd take doing blog posts over subs, movies, TV shows and other fun stuff any day of the week rather than the hateful tripe you post on a continual basis over at that blog of yours. So keep throwing out the references to my sub reviews, cause people seem to really enjoy them.
We all know how much you have to get the last word on Ed's blog, so I'll leave this thread now and let you have your final say. Wouldn't be a Bubba thread otherwise.

If he gets the nomination, Huckabee is the GOP's McGovern.

Blah blah, woof woof.......
See you next time, Ged.
Come better prepared.

"In reality, Ron Paul is closer to Ronald Reagan than anyone else..." -- Spag
Bubba, that's your que to tell Sam he doesn't know what he's talking about, that Paul is a fringe lunatic and for good measure, to add some smarmy non sequitur insulting Sam.
Posted by: Roch101 | Jan 05, 2008 at 10:57 AM
Matthews is too far to the Right for Ged, Bubba. He probably thinks that anyone to the Right of Marx is a moderate, and yet claims you are out of the mainstream.
Denying that Chris Matthews is a liberal/progressive Democrat ruins your credibility, Ged, considering the mountain of evidence to support it and the fact that Matthews has admitted it on more than one occasion.
Posted by: Spag | Jan 05, 2008 at 11:45 AM
Bob used to favor a Giuliani/Rice ticket. How's that working out?
Sam, you are the rare bird who does not see Huck's positioning. Then again, you were the rare viewer who saw no cross in the Christmas ad (which, by the way, also drew comment for its overt mention of Christ). Then again again, you seem to pay attention selectively on this stuff -- how else could you claim Hillary, she of the much-documented Methodism, has never said what denomination she is?

"Bob used to favor a Giuliani/Rice ticket. How's that working out?"
Perhaps much better than you think.
Who do you support?
Bono/Clooney?

No, it's your cue to remind us of your cluelessness.

"I hate Republicans. When I'm elected President of the United States I plan to feed Republicans to the poor."
That's because Republicans taste better than dog meat, right?
Or is that just the latest Dem policy position to solve the environmentalist concerns regarding overpopulation?
On the other hand, it could be the Dem solution to solving the Medicare funding crisis.
