Swing State Project considers Dems who might run for Dole's seat.
Not mentioned: Kay Hagan.
She's tough, and smart, and doing a lot of good things in Raleigh...

I agree that Kay Hagan would be a wonderful choice for us Dems for Senate. I think she might take a stab at a US House seat first though. Maybe Cobles seat. Robin Britt might be another good choice or maybe even Brad Miller. Can anyone say Pricey?
Among the potential opponents, Easley says he will not run, Edwards will run for President, Gov Hunt would be my pick, but from what I understand he is also not interested, and Bob Etheridge doesn't have the name recognition he would need.
I do have a feeling that Dole, who is somewhat of a control freak, will not like being in the minority and probably won't run in 08, leaving the seat open. Maybe Marcus Kindley can run for the Republicans?

The people who would be ideal candidates to best represent the Republican party for this seat would be:
- Marcus Kindley - republican principles, and easy to get along with (only if you agree with his point of view)
- Billy Yow - hates everyone not like himself, and would be great to see on C-span at 2:00am
- Former Congressman Charles Taylor - he a tree farmer by trade, and anti-environmental bills he voted for, he now has a lot less business, and may be willing to take on a new job.

There is more potential power in the Governors office, so Cooper would be wiser to pursue that course. Easley has a good shot if he runs which he says he isn't. Miller would get killed because he is far too liberal to win statewide.
I would suggest Elaine Marshall if I was a Democrat, but I think that is highly unlikely. Of course you guys could always retread Erskine again...or Edwards.
Republican list of potentials would include Sue Myrick, Virginia Foxx, Sen. Phil Berger, and Pat McCrory.

Kay is great, but she does not have enough heft to go statewide at this time. It would be very hard for her once she got outside the area.

I am picturing Kay Hagan and Liddy Dole in a debate and it looks a lot like the Mac and PC guys on tv.

If you talk with anyone who know's Liddy Dole, they will confirm that she is one of the most scripted speakers in the southeast. No debates, and speak only the 1 or 2 generic lines.
But, I honestly think her health will be the issue, and she will not run again. In '07, we will probably hear about a Washington insider, with ties to NC, moving to the state, gaining residence, and trying to build support on the GOP side.
Regarding Kay Hagan, she is more powerful than most people think. (she is just modest about it, and just 'gets things done'). She may not run for higher office in '08, but I see her doing so in the future.
A few in her family are involved in politics, and most rarely lose, due to being so moderate.
Her uncle is a great example. He ran for office for 30 years, and never once lost. He even beat Jeb Bush for governor in the GOP sweep of '94.

Sounds eerily like Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Dole a "control freak?"
How do you know this? I worked for her for several years while I was in college and knew her to be anything but a control freak. She is not afraid to stand up for herself, and whenever she believes in an issue she takes a stand on it. Very pleasant woman to be around.
How the hell is she a "control freak"? Why don't you stop judging people you don't know all that well, chief?

I'm not sure if control freak is the word, but in the past, she has rarely been in a situation where she was a minority.
2 years is along time, and her health, and what happens over the next 6 months will tell it all.
In the end, she may decide to order 2 months of viagra for Bob, and whisk away to an island with her Red Cross money that was never found...then visit Michael Jackson when she returns, to discuss her next facial modifications.

And than we will recieve press reports that two American senior citzens were found dead in a sunk Jap Submarine from WW2 in a terrible driving accident gone wrong. Michael Jackson remains will be found at the scene of the accident in the Capt's head.
