I and many of my neighbors went through a similar experience recently with a friend just a couple of doors down from my house.

The friend had lost his girlfriend, then his sobriety, then his job, and finally his will to change any of it. His depression was deep and dark. This strong, vital man had reduced himself to a sobbing mess. It was heartbreaking to witness.

Even after many many 'interventions' by friends and family, and the resulting week long periods of hesitant sobriety following each - we all knew that unless our friend changed himself, all of our efforts were just postponing the inevitable.

They auctioned the contents of his house back in November.

I hope Brian has better luck with his friend.
