Donald Trump is the hair-metal band of politics, down to the curious coiffure, and as with those '80s MTV icons not everyone is in on the joke. 

Romney and his campaign got it: "Even one of Trump's aides conceded....'[Romney] looked about as sheepish as you can get. He looked like a guy going to a dentist's office.'"

But they also wanted to court the people who didn't. 

It did not go well.
