David Hoggard

Saw that on the N&R news feed and thought, "There, WITH the grace of God, go I".

Times have been hard. And anyone who has gone unscathed - either by their mortgage company or the IRS - should count your blessings. Tax woes are a fact of life across a wide swath of the business ownership class.

I went through foreclosure proceedings in 2004-5. It was never consummated, but damn scary. We kept the house and the mortgage.

Over the last 6 years, between personal and my business tax debts, I have had three tax liens filed by the fine folks at the IRS. I simply didn't have the money when it was due and liens are just their way of securing the debt. All debts were paid in full (including their almost usury interest and penalty charges) and all liens have been released. But they remain on the public record.

Owning/running a business is tough, and I don't look askance at any 'job creator' who might run afoul of the IRS. It is how/if they finally settle the debt that makes the difference to me.

Spag

If you paid higher taxes, you'd have more money to pay those higher taxes. Or would you?

Owning a business is tough. The tax burden makes it tougher, but let's have more of that.

As for Perkins, question whether his push for taxpayer support for projects that he has a direct or indirect personal financial interest in is worthy of further inquiry. Those who have been calling him a "crony-capitalist" for a long time may be on to something.

Andrew Brod

It's fun to pile on, but seriously, how does this news make the accusations of crony capitalism more believable?

Triadwatch

Keep your blinders on Andrew

Andrew Brod

First, asking a question doesn't imply wearing blinders; if anything it's the failure to ask questions that does. Second, re-read my question and note which word I emphasized.

Hartzman

"The Mortgage Debt Relief Act of 2007 generally allows taxpayers to exclude income from the discharge of debt on their principal residence. Debt reduced through mortgage restructuring, as well as mortgage debt forgiven in connection with a foreclosure, qualifies for the relief.

This provision applies to debt forgiven in calendar years 2007 through 2012.

You borrow $10,000 and default on the loan after paying back $2,000. If the lender is unable to collect the remaining debt from you, there is a cancellation of debt of $8,000, which generally is taxable income to you."

http://www.irs.gov/Individuals/The-Mortgage-Forgiveness-Debt-Relief-Act-...
.
.
.
"The couple are alleged to owe $1.2 million in principal and interest

...The house has a tax value of $905,800."
.
Let's call it a $300,000 difference x a hypothetical 33% income tax rate
= a $99,000 for Robbie if the house can be foreclosed on by the end of 2012?
.
.
.
Problem is it probably won't sell for $800,000.
.
.
.
"does this news make the accusations of crony capitalism more believable?"

Yes.

Hartzman

Mr. Perkins lied to his campaign contributors.

Lied to voters.

Who knows what's taken place under the table
or with city "contracts" less than the minimum for Council approval.

I think anything less than $20,000, is at the "discretion" of the city manager.

The City of Greensboro is sitting on about $300,000,000 in cash.

Someone needs to make sure everything is still where its supposed to be.

Apparently he's still paying his country club dues
to keep his mistress happy,
while foreclosing on the wife and kid to get a tax break for next year.

This is a selective default.

As in default of a loan as a tactic to minimize taxes
and walk away from money borrowed to fund other ventures.

The Greensboro News & Record, John Hammer and Yes Weekly
let him pass go without reporting what they should have.

Andrew Brod

George, you've outlined Robbie's tax and financial problems and you assert that those problems make it more believable that he's "crony capitalist." But you cut off the first word of my question: How does this news make the accusations of crony capitalism more believable?

Hartzman

There's never one cockroach.

Roch, the Hartzman-designated extortionist

How, Andy? Like this:

[some fact] + [accusation] = proof

That's sufficient in George's mind.

Andrew Brod

I think George has finally made himself pretty clear on this.

bubba

So how did Hizzoner get a $1.2 million mortgage on a $750 home? Under what circumstances was the loan made, and what was the justification for those particular provisions?

That'smore that sufficient enough to ask for aanswers, whether the defenders of bad government and bad policy making like it or not.

Hartzman

Who did the city hire as a lobbyist in DC?

One of Robbie's contributor's kids.

Who paid a couple of million for the YWCA,
which impeded sales of Center Point with a women's homeless shelter
which Robbie could see from his condo?

City taxpayers.

Who paid a couple hundred thousand for a parking lot
next to a commercial property Robbie was the listing agent for?

City taxpayers.

Who wants to spend taxpayer money to fix up the saloon
next to the $200,000 taxpayer funded parking lot
next to Robbie's listing?

Robbie Perkins.

Who gave Roy water and sewer for Birch Creek?

City taxpayers.

Who gets priority service for zoning and approving
from the city of Greensboro?

Robbie's contributors and Greensboro's connected old money.

Who gets caught up in red tape? Everyone else.

The city manager was/is the Greensboro Partnership lobbyist.

Her husband is a lobbyist.

Who's negotiating with DGI for a lease in her new elm street commercial property?

Nancy Hoffman.

Who was allowed to vote to give money for DGI?

Nancy Hoffman, who may now reap profits from her votes
while the yes man city attorney says its OK.

Who was one of the biggest supporters in Charlotte
for performing arts centers?

The new city attorney.

How many attorney's applied for the city attorney job?

One.

Who gutted RUCO for their campaign contributors?

Robbie Perkins.

Who tried to inflict downtown with a 45 decibel noise ordinance?

Robbie Perkins.

Roch, the Hartzman-designated extortionist
Who's negotiating with DGI for a lease in her new elm street commercial property?

Nancy Hoffman.

Who was allowed to vote to give money for DGI?

Nancy Hoffman, who may now reap profits from her votes
while the yes man city attorney says its OK.

-- Scurrilous George

Let's take this one as a good example. You put those things in close proximity and that's good for an insinuation, but it doesn't convince those of us with a head on our shoulders who will need to know:

What is the address of Hoffman's property?
When did she buy it?
What evidence is there that she is negotiating a lease with DGI?
What votes did she take regarding DGI subsequent to her purchase?
What did the city attorney say?

Hartzman

Then there is the illegal lobbying on the part of Robbie's TREBIC.

TREBIC is a non-profit, so "donations" are deductible
as long as the money is not used for political activities
or lobbying.

TREBIC is supposed to tell donors to separate the non-deductible
from the deductible.

Never happened. Confirmed fact.

All of the donors to TREBIC have not been notified
that some of what they deducted shouldn't have been.

TREBIC owes taxes on the money used for political activities
and lobbying.

Marlene Sanford illegally lobbied the state.

No problems for her or TREBIC's contributors yet.

They harmed renters state wide,
and Ed, who used to be a RUCO supporter, won't seem to write about it anymore.

Ed, Andy, Roch and others have covered for these folks long enough.

Marsh Prouse, a Robbie supporter and contributor
was allowed to moderate the News & Record sponsored mayor debate.

The RUCO board was stacked. The post RUCO ad hoc committee is stacked.

The Housing Commission is stacked.

The housing inspection division was decimated
and some are using the Susan Schwartz of the city
as a scapegoat.

She is the one who released the study saying it's messed up.

Our inspection problems are a direct consequence
of what Robbie, Zack, Jim Kee, and now Nancy Hoffman's actions.

bubba

".....but it doesn't convince those of us with a head on our shoulders who will need to know..."

So how did the future Hizzoner qualify for a $1.2 million mortgage on a $750k home, particularly in light of his previous financial distress?

Under what circumstances was the loan made, and what was the justification for those particular provisions?

Nothing to see here, nothing worth asking any questions, particularly in the minds of those who need to distract attention away from inconvenient evidence, I'm sure.

David Hoggard

"inconvenient evidence..."

How can evidence be inconvenient if it doesn't exist? "Inconvenient evidence" may come to light, but all I see so far is innuendo and conspiracy theory.

George are you still running for mayor of Greensboro?

Roch, the Hartzman-designated extortionist

Bob, we agree that there are questions worth asking. Do you find the "evidence" of Hoffman's self-serving convincing or do you agree with me that the evidence is insufficient?

Hartzman

"Form 8-K for NEWBRIDGE BANCORP

17-Oct-2012

Change in Directors or Principal Officers

ITEM 5.02. DEPARTURE OF DIRECTORS OR PRINCIPAL OFFICERS...

(b) On October 16, 2012, Robert V. Perkins gave notice of his resignation from the Boards of Directors of NewBridge Bancorp (the "Company") and NewBridge Bank (the "Bank").

Mr. Perkins indicated that his decision to resign is due to increased family and business responsibilities...

Mr. Perkins' decision to resign was not the result of any disagreement with the Company or its management.

The Boards of Directors of the Company and the Bank express their sincere appreciation for Mr. Perkins' service to the Company and the Bank."

"NewBridge Bank is a full-service, state-chartered community bank headquartered in Greensboro, North Carolina.

NewBridge Bank was formed in November 2007 in a merger-of-equals transaction between LSBTheBank and FNB Southeas...

Today, NewBridge Bank embodies and benefits from the longstanding client relationships and personal level of service that were the hallmarks of both LSBTheBank (founded in Lexington, NC, in 1949) and FNB Southeast (founded in Reidsville, NC, in 1910).

If Robbie is selectively defaulting on loans to a bank
which he just resigned as a board member of,
and the bank didn't disclose the actual circumstances of the issue,
the bank appears to have violated Sarbanes/Oxley disclosure laws
if the loan is/was tied to Newbridge.

It also appears that these loans are worth more than the properties are/were worth,
which indicated Mr. Perkins's may have received special treatment
and is now defaulting on one of the loans on purpose.

Hartzman

Please call the city attorney on Hoffman.

We spoke on this issue months ago.

He said there wasn't a conflict of interest.

I disagree, especially as Mrs. Hoffman voted to let DGI have $18,000 at the last meeting, which for all I know, may pay for the upfit so DGI can move in.

Mrs. Hoffman's financial disclosures have not been updated to reflect the new property, as the form requires within 30 days.

This isn't conspiracy David.

This is Crony Capitalism, Self Dealing and Rent Seeking.

Hartzman

As of now, I have every intention of running for mayor of the City of Greensboro in 2013.

If Robbie resigns, I will put my name in the hat as a replacement.

If, which I doubt will happen, I am picked to serve until the next election, I will not run in 2013.

This needs fixed.

There is not supposed to be one set of rules for most
and another for a select few.

I believe it can be fixed in short order.

We are not going to attract jobs to Guilford County with this kind of corruption in the headlines every other month.

Andrew Brod

All of which answers my original question: There's nothing about the latest news about Perkins that makes George's accusations more believable. All he's done is rehash his old facts and accusations.

Roch,

"Please call the city attorney on Hoffman." -- Scurrilous George

This is the problem. You have an aversion to directness and clarity. I asked you a series of direct questions that would, if answered, prove or disprove your accusations. You will not answer them.

If you think Greensboro has a need for a mayor who makes unfounded personal accusations against her citizens and cravenly hides behind intentional ambiguity and confusion to maintain them, you are delusional.

bubba

"How can evidence be inconvenient if it doesn't exist?"

That fact that you can't or won't see it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

sal leone

I will have to say that when we as a people elect someone we have to hold them to a high standard. I am speaking for myself only but lets say I won the council race, first thing I would make sure is that any rental property I have is up to code, second is that any property I am buying would have no dealings with the city or any group that is connected to the city, third I would conduct my personal life and business life with honor and respect. There has to be some ethics here, it seems to me that certain council members are too busy running their personal and business life that city issues are becoming second hand issues.

I read all the comments and all have some good points, running a business is hard and the IRS is not someone you want at your door.

Fec

Absent charges of illegality, at some point we need to start recognizing the effect the economy is having on all of us, elected officials included. There is a case to be made that the Mayor's problems were made worse by his long years of public service. When times are hard you need to be focused solely on your business.

Spag

Or you can use taxpayer money to subsidize your business if the market won't.

Mick

Significant renovations could explain at least some of the value differences. Good deal at original sale price of $750,000? Robbie was his own Realtor? Irving Park has been an appreciating ultra hot destination for many many years. However, the recession has had a major impact on upper end homes. I have no concrete ideas or specific facts or info. Also, is the second lot included in the more recent 1.2 figure?

Just adding possibilities as I have zero info.

Hartzman

"There's nothing about the latest news about Perkins that makes George's accusations more believable. All he's done is rehash his old facts and accusations."

Andrew, I believe you are suffering from self inflicted cognitive dissonance.

You may want to seek psychological treatment if the symptoms persist.
.
.
.
Roch, if you repeat the same old counterargument of "I asked you a series of direct questions that would, if answered, prove or disprove your accusations," once again, you have re-succeeded in saying nothing. Do you realize how many times you have utilized the same failed tactic?
.
.
.
If you think Greensboro has a need for a mayor who makes unfounded personal accusations against her citizens and cravenly hides behind intentional ambiguity and confusion to maintain them, you are delusional.

"If you think Greensboro has a need for a mayor who makes unfounded personal accusations against her citizens and cravenly hides behind intentional ambiguity and confusion to maintain them, you are delusional."

What am I not being clear on Roch?

Where is the ambiguity of my statements?

If you are confused, please look within for faults found in others of your belief.

2 + 2 = 4 Roch.

Please provide any ambiguity for anyone to respond to,
otherwise, your rhetoric is that of a coward
with a history of hit jobs on potential enemies of your clients.

You, Roch, should be ashamed of yourself.

Hartzman

"Absent charges of illegality"

Fec the sell out to whom anyone could guess

.
.
Mr. Perkins illegally funded TREBIC Fec
by deducting contributions destined for lobbying and Political Activities.

To be clear, to the dumb-asses out there who are too dense to understand,
Robbie and TREBIC used our money, taxpayer money if it was deducted,
to illegally lobby and influence the political process.

You get that Roch?

Are you so dense it doesn't register against your conflicts?

Are you purposefully being ignorant Roch?

.
.
It appears Newbridge bank illegally informed their shareholders
of something that wasn't true.

Get it Fec,
or is it that truth doesn't matter on the local level,
but only on the national?

BrendaF

Hartzman is delusional. Take your meds George! Your an effing joke to everyone but yourself.

sal leone

Lets not be hard to eachother on here. There are some good agruments and time will tell how it unfolds. The main fact is that maybe rob needs to step down as Mayor, he has a lot on his plate.

David Hoggard

'The main fact is that maybe rob needs to step down as Mayor'

"rob"?!? Seriously? And far from being a "main fact"... it is a half baked opinion borne of little more than the twisted, disjointed and, yes, delusional spewings from long-time I-hope-I-get-my-name-in-the-paper Perkins detractors, one of which is a blow-hard self-identified and self-important campaign opponent who would be lucky to receive the votes of his closest friends.

If there is evidence of all that has been alleged here (and at Billy's), bring it forward, please... I want to be outraged, too. But so far, all that is actually going on is a masterful job of withholding any actual evidence and substituting for it innuendo and conspiracy theories.

Perkins is having financial and marital troubles. I get that - and actually sympathize with him rather than get all outraged over it. Do those troubles make him unfit or unqualified to serve as elected? Hardly.

sal leone

Hi David
I did not want to come across mean or evil towards the guy, all I was trying to say that he has a lot on his mind. The divorce and family issues is hard enough and throw in the money problems, well its a lot to deal with.

The 2013 election is shaping up, Hartzman and Perkins.

Hartzman

"a half baked opinion borne of little more than the twisted, disjointed and, yes, delusional spewings from long-time I-hope-I-get-my-name-in-the-paper Perkins detractors, one of which is a blow-hard self-identified and self-important campaign opponent who would be lucky to receive the votes of his closest friends."

And the politics of destruction begin,
regardless of the facts.

Quite a few adjectives there David.

You almost hurt my feelings,
except for what a few know which is not worth bringing up.

What half baked opinion do you see David?
.
.
.
"If there is evidence of all that has been alleged here"

David, there is evidence all over the place,
but if you can't bring yourself to clearly look at your man Perkins,
you will be unable to see it until you can accept that you were wrong.

The guy you voted for David, is one of the bad guys.

An actual bad guy, whose done bad things
while telling those who supported him and gave him campaign money
lies for their time and money.

Let's call it the Bush/Romney syndrome.

Do you believe there were weapons of mass destruction David?

Some still believe Obama is a Muslim terrorist
borne in another country.

Your delusion exists because you don't want to have to admit to yourself
that you made a mistake in supporting a not very good person.
.
.
.
Sal, I would be amazed if Robbie runs next year.

I hear Tom Phillips and Kieth Holiday may also run.

Hoggard, Roch, Ed, Andrew and friends have done our city a disservice
by hiding some basic truths about some of our local officials.

Instead of realizing what they did, or did by not doing
they are attacking those who figured it out.

Sad really.

Fec

That's right, George. You've found us out. We've had the goods on Robbie for years, but because we voted for him, we can't disclose, lest we be seen as fools. Congrats.

Hartzman

I'll take that as disingenuous sarcasm Fec.

You had vote for Robbie all over your site during the election
and you knew what was up and backed him anyway.

The problem is not knowing whether you mean whatever it is you say.

I very much enjoy your writing,
but believing anything of substance isn't really possible anymore.

I can't tell when you're lying for fun or not.

sean coon

hartzman, would it be possible for you to clearly outline your issues with perkins and provide links to specific "evidence," if you have it.

i don't know you from a hole in the wall and i didn't vote locally this time around, so i've no skin in this game... but i gotta say, you sound rather ridiculous.

Fec

That's OK, George. There are still a few who understand what I am trying to say.

One of those things is we can't accuse without proof.

What happened: did your mother refuse you the tit and the bottle once too often?

Hartzman

"you sound rather ridiculous."

I sound ridiculous because the local for profit media
didn't do their jobs.

And now that part of the cat is out of the bag,
the local bloggers who knew and said nothing are complicit,
Fec being one of them.

So bring on the hatorade ladies and gentlemen.

Vilify those who had the temerity to speak out.

Converse only with those who choose
to continue to believe what isn't.

That way, I am a wacko, and you get to believe what you want to,
whether true or not.

It's almost a national pastime already.

Hartzman

On Hoffman from another;

What is the address of Hoffman's property?

302/304 S elm St

When did she buy it?

July 2012 under Enfield LLC Desmond is the registered agent.

What evidence is there that she is negotiating a lease with DGI?

There are actually 2 drafts...the latest one stipulates that dgi will be responsible for up-fits to nancy's building.

The NC historical reviewers have had conversation with ed wolverton and nancy hoffman regardin dgi moving in...

Desmond Sheridan is now nancy's attorney and wrote the lease, Ellen Sheridan is now Nancy's decorator, graham Sheridan was nancy's campaign manager.

What votes did she take regarding DGI subsequent to her purchase?

She voted twice...once to allow dgi to retain the unspent monies and once to approve their 2012/2013 budgets

What did the city attorney say?

He said that he did no see any conflicts...

So much for someone who ran as "the anti establishment"

Fec

What did I know and when did I know it?

Hartzman

David Hoggard, are you in any way involved in Nancy's deal with DGI?

Hartzman

"How can evidence be inconvenient if it doesn't exist?"

"Inconvenient evidence" may come to light,
but all I see so far is innuendo and conspiracy theory."

"it is a half baked opinion borne of little more

"But so far, all that is actually going on

David Hoggard
.
.
.
Is Robbie Perkins remaining as mayor
and the status quo remaining in tact
important to you David?

If you have skin in the game, and you just said what you said...

Andrew Brod

That's right, David. If you disagree with George, the only logical implication is that you're part of the conspiracy.

Only George is pure and untainted.

Hartzman

It's a strait up question Andrew.

Please take into account whether I chose to ask the question
either informed of the answer or not.

I suppose that's your guess to make at the moment.

If David Hoggard is involved in Nancy's deal with DGI,
his statements here after the information was disclosed
is null and void.

I love it when "conspiracy" gets thrown around.

What conspiracy andrew?

Name the conspiracy andrew,
otherwise you are doing what David appears to have done
which is preserve the status quo to preserve yourself.

Taught any classes lately?

As far as "pure and untainted,"
I have worked as a financial advisor since 1993,
and have taught CPA and attorney financial ethics in North Carolina for the last 10 years.

My employment at Wells Fargo Advisors was terminated
on Monday, October 8, 2012
for disseminating whistleblower information
that our regulatory infrastructure seems unwilling to act upon
and our mass media won’t report.

Wachovia, Wells Fargo, KPMG, the SEC and the Federal Reserve illegally misled Wachovia’s shareholders, taxpayers and Congress as insiders profited from material information. I disseminated inaccurate advice to clients who’s accounts are governed by the Investment Advisors Act of 1940, based on inaccurate information audited by KPMG and withheld by Wachovia and Wells Fargo’s executive management.

In 2008, Wachovia began borrowing billions from the Federal Reserve’s Term Auction Facility (TAF), which was not disclosed to the firm’s shareholders or reported in the company’s required securities filings. Some banks that received Term Auction Facility (TAF) loans disclosed total credit lines, interest rates, collateral pledged and amounts outstanding, but Wachovia and later Wells Fargo didn’t. Bloomberg News, nor any other for profit news organization that I am aware of, has reported on the violations since November, 2011.

Wells Fargo led thousands of brokers to defraud the government by using TARP and TAF money for bonuses by incentivizing the omission of fees in financial plans after the Wachovia merger. Greg Shiveley, [financial plan] Sales Manager at Wells Fargo Advisors, said “The overwhelming majority of [financial plans] do not include investment costs." To qualify for a retention bonus, I violated fiduciary responsibilities by not including investment fees in financial plans. There was no way to both get the bonus and include investment costs.

David Hoggard

I know, Andrew. He seems to think I am of some importance

"David Hoggard, are you in any way involved in Nancy's deal with DGI?"

I have no idea what that even means. I've never met Nancy Hoffman and have no clue as to any of the workings/dealings of DGI.

"Hoggard, Roch, Ed, Andrew and friends have done our city a disservice by hiding some basic truths about some of our local officials."

Don't know about the others, but I haven't hidden anything.

Sean, I'm afraid he doesn't respond to such requests. Others have tried... for years. Notice, in the post regarding Hoffman above, he doesn't present much of any substance except that the city attorney found no conflicts. Which is probably true (which, I'm guessing, "proves" that the city attorney is in on the conspiracy, too). The balance is all a tiresome game of dot connecting.

Problem for Greensboro is that one of these days he might actually latch on to something significant and provable. But like the boy who cried "wolf" all the time, it won't be recognized as the real thing when/if it actually happens.

Sad, really. But weirdly entertaining.

Hartzman

Who is doing some windows at 302/304 S elm St David?

Andrew Brod

And if it's you, David, it's proof that you're corrupt. Who cares if you're creating jobs?

Hartzman

"And if it's you, David, it's proof that you're corrupt."

If it's true, Mr. Hoggard lied.

Interesting how it is that you don't get that Andrew.

If it's true, than Nancy Hoffman voted to give taxpayer money
to herself.

I think it's described as "self dealing,"
but in this case, the money came from everyone's taxes.

I realize you appear to have no problem
with stealing from other people's kids
by taking money from taxpayers and redistributing it to a select few Andrew,
but if true...
.
.
.
"Who cares if you're creating jobs?"

Again, an amazing example of cognitive dissonance.

I assume you will sleep well tonight,
living in your own contrived version of reality.
