There's a long-running debate over the N&R's obligation to fact-check the letters it publishes. Obviously the paper lacks the manpower to vet every fact in every letter, but surely there are red flags that should bring more scrutiny to some claims before publication. Anything pertaining to the killing of Trayvon Martin probably falls into that category.
In any case, Jeff Sykes does some peer-editing in this morning's paper on the subject of "White Hispanics," which category was not, contrary to yesterday's letter, invented by the media for this case.
I have some problems with "Hispanic" as a catch-all term, because it seems like a way of erasing the history of millions of indigenous Americans.
