A reader with some knowledge of the situation responds to yesterday's report on the demolition of the historic house on Smith Street:
There were a lot of problems with that building and a lot of costs to repair. Holy Trinity spent a lot of money fixing up the two houses on Fisher. The Smith Street House was a potential financial sinkhole.
Holy Trinity is working on a long term plan for the block that is sensitive to the neighbors and the city. Many folks do not realize that only one half of the block is in the Fisher Park historic district.
Most important, a parking lot is not going in, but instead a community garden for now.
