I've never fallen in love with Table 16 the way I did with its predecessor at South Elm and Lewis, Undercurrent, but the lunch I just had might change that. The chicken breast was, well, a chicken breast, but the sides -- a breaded chile relleno stuffed with white grits and black beans, and pink-eyed peas in duck stock with fatback and a bunch of other good stuff -- were incredible. They've made some changes recently, and it shows.

And what kind of wine went well with this nice southern lunch in the beginning of the winter season. As a NYer, I am curious when I read about this nice sounding meals "ye'all" enjoy.

I had water. For one thing, I got the meal to go because I have the dog with me, and it's too cold to eat outside. And despite a New Year's resolution a while back to drink more during the day, I usually abstain at lunch, because I'm a lightweight. I would have no clue what wine goes with that meal, but I hear the new wine guy at the restaurant is quite good. It's less than an hour from the Dean Dome, should you find yourself in the area...

"Ye'all?" Lord.

Duck stock (and better yet, duck fat!) improves anything, much the way that bacon does, but sometimes even more so. I bet it could even make Spam tasty.

It's never too early for wine. Remember...it's 5 O'Clock somewhere!
Over the summer I was at a restaurant in New York at 11:30am. I was thinking about having a beer, and I said to the waitress 'is it too early....' I didn't finish my sentence because she interrupted with a resounding 'it's never to early, order it!'.
I ordered it. My day was good. :-)

Ian, nothing makes spam tasty. I hate spam.
Well, there's egg and bacon,
egg sausage and bacon
Egg and spam
Egg, bacon and spam
Egg, bacon, sausage and spam
Spam, bacon, sausage and spam
Spam, egg, spam, spam, bacon and spam
Spam, sausage, spam, spam, spam, bacon, spam tomato and spam
Spam, spam, spam, egg and spam
Spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, baked beans, spam, spam, spam and spam.
I really hate spam.

Kim - I like your style.
I'll never forget having a wine at noon at a restaurant museum in NYC and becoming so tipsy that I almost stuck my table mate (who I didn't know) with my bill. I fairly floated through the museum that afternoon, and I'm not sure but I think it enhanced my experience.
I took comfort in the knowledge that many artists love to imbibe and I must have been channeling them that day.

Sorry, Patrick---I meant no offense and don't even know how to spell the slang I was trying to use.
Ed- That is a noble New Year's resolution you have, and I will let you know when I plan my annual trip to Cat's Cradle and the Dean Dome, although I may postpone it because I plan to make several trips next winter when {Dexter Strickland} --I forgot how to create the hyperlink---- arrives on Franklin street.
Be well all.

I would not mind dogs at restaurants, they are often better behaved than children, and good company. Table 16 has a good wine list. wouldn't it be fun to say:
"the dog will have the zinfindel ,but water for me,please" ?

G/: No offense taken. I was just lashing out in a predictable and not-funny way. Y'all (although we would never say that in reference to a single person) needn't worry.
I thought that sounded like a mighty rich lunch, but if the portions were small enough and Ed is young enough, I'm sure it was fine. I assume he had salad for dinner.

Dashiel Hammett once made the same observation about the common misuse of "youse" that other people do with "y'all." When used by a real speaker of the venacular, it's these words are always plural.

Ian: I look forward to all your comments. The use of "y'all" has been codified and committeefied by an Authority higher than anyone who posts here. Y'all can be singular or plural. The always plural form of y'all is "all ya'll," as in, "all y'all sumbitches can go to hell now..ya hear." I hope this helps. It's what I do.

The useful "y'all" is often attempted by non-natives, but they tend to mangle it into a singular pronoun; certainly nobody who didn't grow up saying it should try to deploy "all y'all" without extensive training. More here.
In Philly and points northeast one hears "youse" or "youse guys." In South Jersey I heard "yiz." Our language lacks a good second person plural and so we create them.

Ed: we also lack 3rd person neutral singular oblique. When an accident occurs involving one person and we wish to know the status of the injured party, we ask the question "how are they", when they is always plural. Yiz would be a good word for that purpose. Lewis Carrol, JD Salinger, George Bernard Shaw, Shakespeare and who the hell ever wrote the KJV of the Bible were guilty. I vote for yiz. Yiz it is.

Ed stumbled upon your old post, it might be worth mentioning here, there was huge tastecasting last night at Table 16 to promote the restaurant and Greensboro, if anyone is interested...
