"How bad will this recession be?" seems a more useful question than "how bad is it now?" The trend is not our friend, and things look worse here than in many other places.
Unemployment in North Carolina jumped by eight-tenths of a percent last month, to 7.9%. That's the highest level since 1983, and well above the national numbers, which we lagged just a year ago.
There was robust growth in two areas: health care and social assistance, and local government.


IIRC, health care was a national leader at 10% yoy - for a few years.
