N&O: "After banning a popular coming-of-age tale, Johnston County school
officials are scouring library shelves for other potentially offensive
books to remove."
The wicked tome in question, copies of which will be used to ignite the pyre of potentially offensive books in downtown Smithfield.
After the jump: a column I wrote for the Rhino Times in 1996 about an attempt to ban The Old Gringo at Grimsley. Hard to imagine the Rhino running a dissenting opinion like that today.

You mean Johnston County isn't a liberal, open-minded place anymore? I mean, by the time I graduated high school in Four Oaks (SJHS Class of '78), they had taken down the "WELCOME TO KLAN COUNTRY" sign at the Smithfield city limits and everything. On the other hand, I suppose it could be taken as a good sign that some folks back home have learned to read at all.
