Because many of them were subsistence farmers. In 1900, almost half of the US population worked or lived on farms.

Not sure what Rabb's getting at with this data point.

Has this ever been different? Shareholder's interests have and always should trump special interests e.g. (Rapp again) "Those of us concerned with African-American participation at the 'C-Level'" or any other for that matter.
