In news about an NC lawmaker that doesn't involve prison terms or alleged wiener-wagging, the National Conference of State Legislatures says, "As the new speaker of the North Carolina House, Joe Hackney is credited with restoring integrity in a chamber tarnished by the actions of its previous leader. Now he will receive the nation's top state legislative honor—the 2007 Excellence in State Legislative Leadership Award."

Integrity takes years to restore and in government, sometimes decades.

Hackney has continued to tarnish the image of the chamber by refusing to allow the marriage amendment to come to the floor of the house for a vote despite the fact that a majority of house members have sponsored a bill in favor of such an amendment.
